Dark Triad Score Guide

Dark Triad Scores: Three Traits Explained

The Dark Triad refers to three socially aversive personality traits: Machiavellianism (manipulative cunning), Narcissism (grandiose self-focus), and Psychopathy (callous impulsivity). Modern tests like the SD3 measure all three independently. This guide explains what every trait level means.

Score Bands at a Glance

Machiavellianism — HighStrategicCalculated, willing to deceive for advantage; long-term manipulator.
Narcissism — LowModestGrounded self-perception; doesn't seek admiration.

What the Research Says

Paulhus & Williams (2002) coined 'Dark Triad' to describe three distinct but correlated socially-aversive traits. The SD3 (Short Dark Triad) by Jones & Paulhus (2014) is the most widely used short instrument.

The three traits share callousness as a common core but differ in motivation and style. Machiavellianism is strategic; narcissism is grandiose; psychopathy is impulsive. The shared variance is what unites the triad; the unique variance distinguishes them.

Most people score low to moderate on all three traits. Extreme elevations on the Dark Triad are uncommon and clinically significant. Sub-clinical elevations are surprisingly compatible with normal life — many high-narcissism people are not pathological.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Dark Triad traits dangerous?

Sub-clinical elevations are common and not 'dangerous'. Clinical-level elevations on Psychopathy in particular are linked to antisocial behaviour. Self-report tests measure sub-clinical traits.

Is narcissism the same here as in NPI?

Related but not identical. Dark Triad narcissism captures grandiose narcissism; the NPI is broader. Vulnerable narcissism — emotional fragility — is distinct and not part of the Dark Triad.

Can I have high all three?

Yes — the three traits correlate moderately, so people who score high on one tend to score above average on the others. But independent variance is large.

Are these traits genetic?

Heritability estimates are 30–50% for each trait — moderate, with significant environmental contribution.

Can Dark Triad traits be reduced?

Self-reports of Machiavellianism and Narcissism shift modestly in therapy; Psychopathy is the most resistant to change.

Are some careers Dark-Triad-favoured?

Sub-clinical Machiavellianism correlates with success in competitive domains (politics, sales, executive roles). Sub-clinical Narcissism with leadership emergence (not effectiveness).

Dark Triad vs Dark Tetrad?

Some researchers add Sadism (taking pleasure in others' suffering) as a fourth trait. The SD4 includes it.

How accurate is a self-report?

Surprisingly accurate — even people high on these traits tend to report them honestly. Social desirability bias is smaller than you'd expect.
